Addiction
Addiction presents itself in many forms. The most common addictions that are discussed are drug addiction and alcohol addiction. Individuals can also become addicted to pornography, sex, work, gambling, eating, shopping, and many other materials or lifestyles that take the individual away from reality. That is essentially what an addiction is – a destructive habit formed for the purpose of diverting one's attention away from the reality of life. When you hear that Joe‘s spouse died suddenly and he “turned to the bottle” to deal with it, Joe was choosing not to deal with the pain and agony of loosing his partner in life and found that the alcohol removed the sting. Once Joe realizes that alcohol works, he is more apt to use alcohol for any problem that may arise in his life. The problem is that Joe has not deal with the core issue of his spouse“s death and therefore still has the pain deep inside.

At Orange Coast Recovery, we provide a safe, loving environment for drug rehab where we assist individuals in dealing with their core issues so that they may achieve sustainable sobriety, and ultimately a joyful life.
In Joe's case, he may not be able to talk sincerely about his problem in public, in a group, and definitely not with strangers. This is where the importance of one-on-one therapy is evident.
Drug addiction has two components: physical dependency, and psychological dependency. Physical dependency occurs when a drug has been used habitually and the body has become accustomed to its effects. The person must then continue to use the drug in order to feel normal, or its absence will trigger the symptoms of withdrawal. Psychological dependency occurs when a drug has been used habitually and the mind has become emotionally reliant on its effects, either to elicit pleasure or relieve pain, and does not feel capable of functioning without it. Its absence produces intense cravings, which are often brought on or magnified by stress. A dependent person may have either aspects of dependency or both.
Substance abuse can occur with or without dependency, and with or without addiction. Substance abuse is any use of a substance, which causes more harm than good.
Dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorders may be present in many cases, and treatment for underlying issues may be necessary.
At Orange Coast Recovery, we specialize in assisting our clients in finding ou why they started using in the first place, healing those issues, and teaching each individual how to live a healthy life of long-term, sustainable sobriety.
